Well I think that I have done it! I made a website, not a great website but a website. I keep having trouble with the screen shots but I am hopeful they will show up. I have to admit that this was not the easiest assignment and had Kim not helped me out I would have been in some real trouble so thanks again Kim! I hope that I did everything right and while it should have only taken me an hour with the new addition sitting on me (yep, literally sitting on me as I type this) while trying to get this done I almost lost it but again it's done! So good luck to everyone, I hope you all have a wonderful summer. Really looking forward to the next month off and hoping Winston will quickly learn to sleep more than 2 hours a night:)

The final assignment....

Well we are down to the final assignment and I have to say that I am not really feeling all that confident! I must have worked for 5 hours trying to get the background on my fragment/hyperlink assignment to work and nothing would do it! I must have emailed Kim (also in our class) 10 times and she gave me some great advice and what I am sure was the right steps to take but I had no luck and before I threw my computer out the window I had to call it quits. I can see the background through Kompozer and sometimes it comes up but other times nada! I must have deleted and restarted everything 100 times, I hate to give up but it was literally driving me crazy. I am now fearful that this last assignment is going to do the same. Here is to hoping Tomer feels bad for us and gives a super thorough explanation of how to complete this final assignment.

On a personal note I am off to Jersey to see my family and have them meet my son so I am going to try and not think about this class until I get back next Wednesday and then I will only have one week left and I'll never have to think about it again:)

So close

So we are very close to being done and it seems like these last couple assignments are just trying to break me! I finally figured out how to get a background set up for my fragment but for the life of me I cannot get it to show up when I type in my link. I can see it when I am in Kompozer and I have deleted and resaved these documents more times than I can remember. I don't even want to get started on how I feel I did on the quiz! I think I did ok, but I am not sure if what I was writing even makes sense! I hate to blame anything but myself but I swear this lack of sleep is really making me slower! I used to be a pretty together person but between the baby and trying to keep it all together I am slowing losing it:) But again we are so very close to being done I think I can I think I can I think I can!

I need to buy that book....

Fragment Assignment

Alright, I think that I have done it but to be honest I am just really not as confident that I completed this as correctly as I have for the past assignments. I have a fear that even though I can see the information when I type in my links that maybe it's just me and it won't be there when Tomer goes to check. I hate to admit it but I still feel pretty confused and without all the VERY VERY VERY generous and wonderful people who posted on the discussion board I would have been totally and utterly lost. So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to everyone who helped me out without even knowing it. Luckily Prof. Tomer gave me an extension to complete this assignment since I just had little Winston because there is NO way I could have gotten that done without the extra time. It literally takes me four times as long to do anything and everything when there is a little one who can sense when I am doing anything other than feeding him. At the moment my husband is on full alert baby duty so I was able to complete the quiz (ugh....that's all I can say about how I feel I did on that) and get a blog or two done. Only blogs and one more assignment to go. Is it August yet?

Ok I am a little scared about fragments...

As I mentioned in my last blog I just had a little baby boy (Winston) and so I am just getting to some of my final assignments for this semester. I am reading all the posts and looking through some of my fellow classmates blogs and it is all making me VERY nervous and a little scared about our next assignment! I have to watch the last lecture and I am really hoping that will clear things up for me because I am certainly not understanding at all how I am to start let alone complete this next assignment! I have (hopefully understandably) not been thinking about technology class for the last week or so and I need to wrap my head around how to do this assignment and I am hoping that it won't be as difficult as what I am thinking in my head. Well I am off to feed Winston and then hope he sleeps for a couple hours so I can watch the lecture and hopefully get an understanding on where to start to fragment.

Baby Bonnet!

So this is completely off topic but I think that is ok! My husband and I welcomed our first addition to the family. I had a little boy, Winston Richard Bonnet on July 5 at 5:21 am 7 lbs 8 oz. We are all doing well and settling in after being at the hospital for what seemed like forever! I have attached a picture of our little guy meeting one of our kitties Marley after getting home.

Hoping that I can juggle school and being a new mom and being that we are SO close to the end of this semester I am just going to have to make it work for the next couple weeks! I know I can do it but sure am looking forward to August and a month off school:)

Cloud computing represents a shift away from computing as a

I wasn't exactly sure how I was supposed to do this but then I look and literally with a click of a button I sent the info to my blog account and one more click and it was posted! Koha Assignment

Well I think I completed the Koha assignment. I watched the June 8 lecture and followed Dr. Tomer's actions so I am hoping that I have done this correctly. I will just have to keep an eye out on the discussion posts and such to see if any further information is provided on exactly what we were supposed to do. Although for what I did I feel like it was a pretty easy system to use I don't think that I would choose to use this system over others to track or keep lists of my books. This could simply be because I am not all that comfortable with Koha yet but the more I used it the more I would probably like it. I keep finding that Jing is a really interesting and useful tool. My only complaint would be that I wish I could save videos that are longer than 5 minutes with our free accounts. We have to make a video for our storytelling class and while other free sites have been recommended it would be nice to use Jing since I already know how. The video/audio is 7-10 minutes so that's why we can't use Jing. Oh well, I guess it will be nice to learn some new sites and tools!

Well that's about it for now on my thoughts about our assignments to date. I looked at the next one and I am really hoping there is a good bit more explanation because I have NO idea how to start that one! Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Now that was a helpful question

I am sitting here on my first day of "summer break" (OK it's maternity leave but I like to pretend) and am I trying to get as much school work done as possible. I was thinking that I would try and think of as many topics and things to blog about and just save them in a word document and then I could cut and paste them in as the weeks go by. However, I was a little worried that I would be busy or not available to post them. Then I read that great answer on discussion board about how you can schedule your posts! This will be great for me and I know I should have looked around a little more before deciding on my word document theory but it seemed so simple that I saw no need to look further. It was also really nice to see a post on the discussion board that I thought was a good question not everyone would have thought of that would benefit the entire class. I am not saying there haven't been others but before last week there was definitely an abundance of posts that were personal in nature, repeated or just not all that professional. It's nice to see that everyone is maturing and moving along with their class questions. I know the teachers are here to help us but so are our classmates. I admit I have questions all the time and after I try and figure it our myself I email one of our classmates and bug her until the two of us can figure it out. I hope that people aren't afraid to post which it seems they may be since there has been a serious lack of posts lately but instead are taking a little more time to figure things out by themselves if they can.

Well, we are over the half way point and I am hoping that everyone is feeling better than they were at first. Only 6 more classes to go!

A little breathing room is nice!

Well I have to say it was a very nice surprise to learn that the assignment for ePrints is no longer mandatory. I had logged in and taken a look and it seemed as if it was going to be a little more easy to navigate and use than Omeka so I'll have to check it out once the problem has been fixed. However...being 9 months pregnant (I am due July 7) it is nice to have 1 less mandatory assignment to do! Today is my last day of work so I am hoping that I can dedicate next week to getting a majority of my school work done in case this baby decides to come a little early. Which I have to say I wouldn't mind, because I am getting quite uncomfortable!

I like that the next assignment for Koha we are able to pick our own topic to catalogue. It will be a nice change of pace because I have to admit that most of the information and data we have collected hasn't been the most interesting information to me:)

We are half way there, hope everyone is getting by ok and enjoying their summer!

Another assignment done!

So I just finished up the Omeka assignment and once more I am feeling pretty good about it. I have to thank Tim again for posting some really helpful instructions on the discussion posts because at first I was a bit confused.I believe that I have completed this correctly but I will have to wait and check out some other collections once they are up to make sure!

I found that this assignment was a little more time consuming than I thought it would be, probably took me a couple hours total. There is just so much information that a person an input that I can only imagine how long it would take if they filled out every single field. This is an interesting way to keep track of collections and materials. I found that searching and savings articles was much easier for me than using websites. I wasn't exactly sure how to get full use of the "file" field when I didn't have an actual document to attach. I will admit that this assignment was a bit frustrating because the instructions on the syllabus didn't really provide much detail. Maybe a little more detail will come for the next assignments in the beginning so poor Tim doesn't have to answer 50 separate questions on the discussion boards.

Good luck to the rest of you on this assignment. Again, time consuming but not too difficult once you get going!

Watch what you put online

I thought that this was a really interesting and relevant article about the pitfalls involving educators and blogging. It's hard to say what my thoughts would have been when I was in high school because of course there wasn't blogging, texting, facebook and all the new high tech communications that we have today. I know that I am careful about what I post on facebook because many employers can have strict rules about that. Also, when I look to switch professions once I complete my degree (or sooner!) and become a librarian I don't want to run into any unnecessary road blocks. Finding a person's blog, facebook page, etc. is an easy as a Google search so I think it is important that we are all careful. On the other hand I don't think that people (educators especially) are unaware of the potential problems that they could face posting their thoughts so some fault must lay with them. As the article states, the teachers are warned "Perhaps that's why the Pennsylvania State Education Association says on its website that teachers should not blog about their "job duties, colleagues, supervisors, or students." It is a little sad that educators are losing their freedom to speech in order to make sure no lines are crossed but (again like the article says) it is better to be safe than sorry. Especially in a time when jobs are few and far between. To read the full article please see below.

I did it!

Wow, I have to admit I didn't think that I would be able to figure out how to record and capture and download all at the same time. I found that using Jing was relatively easy to do and the problem came when I had added my embedded code to my blog. The first video I had was HUGE and you could only see half the screen. Thankfully I had read the steps from the discussion board and followed Timothy Schlak's advice on how to add a gadget and all problems were solved. I have to say I feel pretty good about it. This class can be overwhelming when I look at all the assignments we have to complete but as long as we receive a little guidance as we have so far I am confident I can do it. I hope that everyone else feels the same way!! Good luck classmates if you have completed this assignment yet, I know you'll get it.

Cheeseburgers - Off topic but still awesome

So this is not a tech related post but I still feel the need to share. I am 8 months (9 months next week) pregnant and besides school work I have one thing I cannot stop thinking about. Cheeseburgers! I swear I think about them 22 out of 24 hours a day. It's all I want to talk about and eat, my son's (yep it's a boy) first word is going to be "cheeseburger" and I am totally OK with that because they are delicious (sorry to all those vegetarians). I didn't think that I would be one of those pregnant ladies who had cravings non-stop but I do and clearly you can tell what it is. Now, on to important business...the best cheeseburgers I have found. One of my new favorite places that one of our own classmates (thanks Kim!) introduced me to is on/close to Pitt's campus, 5 Guys Burgers. WOW! That's all I have to say, and you never have to worry about leaving this place hungry. The portions are so huge you need to order a Little Guy Burger just to get a single patty and the fries! Well get ready to split them because you really don't need to eat that many potatoes at one sitting. Another wonderful burger place is the Sharp Edge Creekhouse in Crafton, conveniently located 3 minutes from my house. They have a variety of burgers and sweet potato fries that are fantastic. I recommend the Sharp Burger or the BBQ Burger, both are awesome but if you like it cooked, say well done. Ok, I could go on and on and on because Pittsburgh is full of great burger places but here is my last one. Red Robin! There is a new one up at Settler's Ridge and I had my first of what will be many many visits here on Sunday. I like to think of Red Robin as my own version of Disney Land. Yes, I liked it that much. I got the Teriyaki Burger that comes with teriyaki of course, shredded lettuce, tomato, and best of all grilled pineapple! The other great aspect of Red Robin, endless fries. No need to go any further. If you sign up online you can get a free birthday burger. So yes, you just heard a pregnant lady rant and rave about burgers and I am ok with that. Should there be somewhere out there I am missing that has an awesome burger I beg (yep begging, not embarrassed) to share it with me. As of right now, Red Robin is number one on my burger list.

Microphone at Walmart

I was reading the posts and thankfully found one about a microphone to buy and thought I would share what I found. The recommendation was for the Logitech USB Desktop Microphone and this is the exact one I picked up. I was at Walmart on Friday and they have it for $8.88. The soon as I attempt my Jing assignment I will be sure to let you all know how well it works:)

On another note I saw that you can just use your headphones for a microphone and that is an awesome tip. I figured I would just do that but since the mic was only $8.88 I just went ahead and purchased since I will need it for my Storytelling class as well. Also, I go through headphones like a crazy lady! It seems that I can only find pairs that last a couple months at most before they start going out in one ear or the other. I have tried the pair that came with my ipod, the around your ear kind, cheap pairs, moderately expensive and the same thing happens every time. If anyone can recommend a quality pair that will last I would sure appreciate it!

RefWorks...why have I not used you in the past?

Well we are 3 classes into this semester and I have to say I am feeling pretty good about completing our second assignment! Now if I can figure out the next 7 I will be in good shape:) I have heard of RefWorks but I sure wish that I known how simple it was to use for some of my other classes. I think those of you who are just starting out in the program are probably feeling overwhelmed (I am and this is my third semester!) but knowing these reference sites will be ideal for writing and citing papers. I have never been very good at citing and RefWorks just solved that problem. I have to admit it took me a little bit to get the hang of searching and exporting on Google Scholar but I thought that Scopus was very easy to navigate. Although I did find that Google Scholar was also a little slow (I don't think it was my computer but it may have been) and I didn't like that I had to select each article one by one in order to export. Unless of course I am just missing something and there is a simple way to select multiple sources at the same time. I would love to know so if I did just miss this please comment and let me know how! Here's hoping that the next assignments will be easy to figure out and not overwhelming. Good luck classmates and again feel free to post any advice you may have for me:)

I'm sure a lot of people have seen this but I just thought it was a funny article. I mean the fact that the library still qualifies a book as late and not lost shows some serious determination to keep track of their books. Technology sure is complex!

Hi Everyone,
As I'm sure you guessed from the title of my blog I am new to this and I have to admit it probably took me way to long to figure out how to create my blog! It looks like I managed to get it up and running and I am looking forward to learning more about blogging and technology in general. I don't think that there is a better field to get myself more up to date on! I am in my third semester as a part time student enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh. My focus in library science is in Children and Youth Services and it would be pretty embarrassing to have all the kids know more about computers and technology than me. Here's to hoping I can get a good grasp on all this and do well in this intro class:)
